Implementing pdf support
Posted November 18th, 2006 by RadiantThunder
Hi, I really like the idea behind this site, nice work !
I would like to know if you could implement a feature where you can upload a pdf file,
and allow others to view and print these pdf files.
Otherwise, great work already.

pdf support
Hi RT,
There is a legal issue with this feature request. Suppose someone would scan in a sheet he bought in the store, save it as pdf and upload it to Wikifonia. This would be considered as an illegal action because one is not allowed to publish someone else's type setting work without permission.
But suppose you would export sheet music you created in any music notation software to pdf and upload it to Wikifonia, then this would be ok. The only issue left is that Wikifonia cannot make the difference between a pdf derived from notation software and one made by scanning. I suppose a solution would be that someone has to upload the source (sib, fin, xml, ...) together with the pdf. If the source file and pdf file matches, we know that the (sheet music) pdf was created by the uploader.
We will think about this as it will require some new development. I'll come back to this issue. I hope in the meantime this answers your question.

But there is actually no way that you can see if I've derived that xml from the sheetmusic I bought or from my hearing. So why is there anything against me uploading a pdf file with scanned in images.
The only thing this does is giving me extra work to convert my sheetmusic to an xml file.
It just can't be checked who copied their file from real sheetmusic and who didn't.
From what I understand, you can only upload typesetting done by yourself.

personal typesetting
So why is there anything against me uploading a pdf file with scanned in images.
The main legal issue with this is that Wikifonia can be held responsible for hosting data for which it has no permission to do so.
From what I understand, you can only upload typesetting done by yourself.
That's correct. Thats why we added the xml barrier. So, for the time being, you can only upload sheet music in the musicxml format. Later on, we might add other sheet music formats like sibelius and finale.
thx
ok thanks for clearing that up thomas.

oh oh, sibilius & finale
oh oh, sibilius & finale would be nice, then i d be able to share alot here :p
Finale & Sibelius musicxml export
Hi surion,
You can already if you work with the latest versions. Finale version 2007 is able to import and export to musicXML, Sibelius 4 requires a plugin to export to musicXML. The plugin is not free but we hope that in a next Sibelius version, the xml export will be standard just like Finale.
